Map updates - what's the secret? - 2010/03/12 11:21
Hi!
I love the SmartMirror but the documentation isn't very helpful beyond the intricacies of operating the GPS.
Assuming that there's no other documentation supplied other than Quick Start Guide that came in the box and the downloadable User Guide, there seems to be a lot left to assumption and all-out messing-around-until-you-find-it with the remaining functions, particularly the Bluetooth functions.
The most sorely lacking piece of information relates to the map updates and maybe less importantly, how to update the Navigon software if you wanted to.
I've looked at the Australia.map file and it's dated 2008 - I know we're generally 20 years behind in some areas but we have have been known to build several roads over a two year period, even in Western Australia...
The Navigon site offers PC-based software called Navigon Fresh that it recommends to use to update maps but it seems that it's applicable only to either GPS hardware with a USB port, or Windows CE boxes, typically PDAs and Mobile Phones, which also have USB ports of some description.
However the lack of a decent installation and operation manual or any hint as to how to update the maps on the SmartMirror on this site means that I don't even know if there's a USB port available on the mirror to perform the updates using the Navigon software, or if I simply copy the maps to the SD card. And if I do copy the maps over, where and how do I obtain them?
All I seem to be doing is running into dead-ends for something which one would imagine seems to be a fundamental function for maintaining a GPS device.
Postscript: I've tried the Navigon Fresh software (which will allegedly work with an SD card in a card reader as well as the USB link) and it says it can't find the software installed on the SD card, yet I can see the MN6 folder in Explorer.

Re:Map updates - what's the secret? - 2010/04/06 02:02
The "secret" is it emulates a Navigon 5100, but only sort of, which is why Freshmaps can't find it.
What I've found is you can get an image of a 5100 from various spots on the web (send me a PM if you can't find it).
Put that on an SD card and then Freshmaps will work. Once you've got the newer maps on your "fake" SD card, you can simply copy the map files over the card in the mirror. To clarify, you ONLY want to copy the map files, not any of the other files.
Of course you should use a new card, since you always want to have the original card in case you do something wrong.
I'm not sure about Australia, but one thing with North American maps is they will just barely fit on a 2GB SD card. In fact, Freshmaps says you have to have a 4GB card, so what I actually do is update using a 4GB card, then use a 2GB card in the mirror.
For whatever reason, the mirror will not accept a card larger than 2GB.
Hope that helps!
Dan

Hi Dan,
At the rate we're replying to each other, surface-mail would be quicker LOL!
Don't know why but I can't PM - usually you just click the user-name or click a PM button somewhere. There's not even a list of users, which having been a moderator of several forums I find unusual, but I digress.
(I also can't change my password via my profile which is annoying)
I'll have a quick squizz through Google for what you suggested but if you happen to have a link to hand I'd appreciate it if you could send it to my gmail addy, account name is my user name here, just all lower case.
Cheers,
Steve

Dan has it right, except there are a couple of other things you must do. The names of the map files need to be changed to match the original file names. Also, you have to copy the points of interest folder over or else you lose the "virtual" effect - where it shows you what lane to be in. I'd give you exact folder and file names, but I'm currently at work.
As to the 4GB not being read in the mirror - might have something to do with the OS limitation to a max of 3GBs of RAM. I haven't tried reformatting my 4GB card to a 3GB to test this, though. But with the US and Canada map copied over, there is only about 1.5 MBs of space left on the 2GB card.

Actually I didn't have to rename anything. You can select the new maps in the options. You're right, there are a few things you have to copy over, such as the POIs.
I think the issue with the card size is technically 2GB is the largest SD card you can buy. All the cards larger than that are actually SDHC card. None of the SDHC cards appear to work.
There were a few "not quite standard" SD cards made larger than 2GB. I have a couple of Q Memory 4GB SD cards, but they don't work either.
E-mail sent!

Just got this mirror on my new Hyundai tuscon.. so far i am a little disappointed. I mean it works alright but the navigation is clunky especially on the fly searching for a point of interest. But I realized part of the problem was that the maps of my area are way out of date. I'm having a hard time updating the maps, any help would be appreciated.

Why doesn't Azentek support their product. I have tried calling for assistance on this issue and the person(s) I need to talk to seem to be in a meeting and never call back.
I have also tried e-mailing the support address and never receive the courtesy of a reply.
I like the mirror but at this point would not recommend it to anyone based on the lack of support!
